about

linear notes from homespun on labor day ~

with the monsoon rains my dragoon can was wearing so many droplets. this morning i mixed down this elo/jeff lynne tune "showdown" from their "Third Day" album. i added all the harmony vocals and drums this AM as well but everything else was in the can as they say....

my admiration for jeff continues on so many levels. for a guy that worked and produced records for so many giants you can barely find a handful of interviews with him. i appreciate that dearly. those sessions mean more to him than he is supposes to tell you.

craig "c-dub" wagner came over some weeks ago with his new synth and we dropped about four tracks of sonic tinkerage which i tried my dangdest to get in the mix to their fullest. craig also thumbed the fender coronado bass live to my first voice/acoustic guitar pass and got it mighty low i might add. we made an early mix of the acoustics and synths. (the opening banter captures our few false starts...)

...after craig's dragoon infused session with me was done chris callahan came by to work on a tune of his and of course to get the levels and things going i nicked some telecaster parts of him in the rocker SIDE TWO of the song. one crunchy rhythm telecaster,. one delayed riffy-caster, and some telecaster part which i am currently working on a name for.

...made this mix in a rush with unsteady hands but certainty of heart. crank'er up if you can handle it and find some headphones too to help the cause along...

sound as ever,

~ jmc

jeff lynne/elo's "showdown" :

craig "c-dub"wagner : 4 synthesizer parts and fender coronado bass taken direct on a live pass with me singing and chunking away on the 1949 epiphone acoustic guitar and singing through my trusty SM57 microphone..

chris callahan : 3 fiery, explorative telecaster parts through various pedals and the folot-a-tone amp here @ homsepun.

jmc : voices, two 1949 epiphone acoustic guitars tuned down to "D", and the sloppy 'my kingdom for a decent drummer' drum part on the muttly drum kit of homespun.

* all parts recorded quickly with very little concern for clipping of problems with the parts and mixed and hack mastered here moments ago in the homespun nerve center over a sweaty dragoon i.p.a.

* photograph of : "Kishterboy" with jeff lynne shirt and the "Third Day" LP in the background along with the aforementioned Dragoon.
